Community Gardens in Baltimore: How Planting Words Helps Neighborhoods Grow

At Planting Words, we believe a garden can change a neighborhood. That is why we provide gardening tools, seeds, and plants to community gardens in low income areas across Baltimore and the State of Maryland. Every bed that gets planted brings fresh food, positive health effects, and real community involvement to the people who need it most.

Why Community Gardens Matter in Baltimore

In many Baltimore neighborhoods, fresh produce is hard to find and green space is even harder. A community garden helps answer both needs at once. A vacant corner becomes a place where vegetables grow, neighbors meet, and children learn where food actually comes from.

Community gardens do more than feed people. They give residents a reason to gather, something to care for together, and a sense of pride in their block. Time spent outdoors with hands in the soil supports both physical and mental health, which sits at the heart of everything Planting Words stands for.

As a 501(c)(3) non profit serving Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and surrounding areas, our role is simple: we make sure the gardeners doing this important work have what they need to keep growing. We are proud to have supplied gardening tools and supplies to the Filbert Street Garden in Baltimore and to the Requity Foundation, and we look forward to helping more gardens across Maryland take root.

What We Provide to Community Gardens

Every garden starts with the basics. Planting Words supplies three things that help shared gardens take root and thrive.

Tools

Gardening Tools

Shovels, rakes, gloves, and the everyday equipment that keeps a shared garden running season after season.

Seeds & Plants

Seeds and Starter Plants

Vegetable seeds, herbs, and young plants that help gardens produce fresh, healthy food for the people who tend them.

Community

Encouragement and Support

Helping hands and uplifting words, because growth happens in people just as much as it happens in soil.

Planting More Than Seeds

Our name carries a double meaning. Through handwritten cards, we plant words of encouragement that uplift hearts and replace frowns with smiles. Through our garden program, we plant real seeds in real soil so communities can grow something lasting together.

Both kinds of planting work the same way. You start small, you tend it with care, and over time it becomes something beautiful that feeds the people around it. When a neighbor harvests a tomato they grew themselves, that is dignity taking root.

The health benefits of community gardening include:

  • Fresh vegetables and herbs grown close to home
  • Time outdoors and gentle physical activity for all ages
  • A calmer mind, lower stress, and a lift in mood
  • Neighbors meeting neighbors and looking out for one another
  • Green spaces that beautify blocks and strengthen community pride

Our Garden Work in Action

These moments come straight from our outreach in the community. Planting Words has supplied gardening tools and supplies to the Filbert Street Garden in Baltimore and to the Requity Foundation, helping real gardens and the neighbors who tend them.
